From Cultural Motifs to a Digital Species Archive

How could a contemporary digital species retain a recognisable connection to the painting that inspired it?

Interpretation

Fluorescent Grasshopper

Articulated legs · a poised silhouette

The recognisable body structure carries through; fine veins and a luminous surface bring a new material reading.

Aurora Lotus

Layered petals · a rising stem

The opening flower stays legible. Translucent petals and shifting reflections translate its lightness into a digital material.

Orange-soda Tiger Lily

Curled petals · speckled surfaces

Curled edges and spots remain the visual anchors, reinterpreted through orange colour, bubbles and glass-like surfaces.

From individual species to a shared environment

The Species Archive / 百灵图

The generated species became part of a larger visual archive. Their forms, names and material associations came together as a digital environment within the final exhibition.

From Interpretation to Physical Objects

Cultural products and layered stamps formed my most complete design-to-production contribution.

Cultural products & layered stamps

A painting becomes something visitors can make and keep.

I adapted visual motifs into printable graphics, separated colour layers and prepared production files. Working with suppliers connected the graphic decisions to alignment, customisation and physical output.

Separate layers make the image reproducible. Registration keeps the branches, leaves and flowers in relationship as the visitor builds the print.

A motif carried into the exhibition

I contributed to the wristband as a physical exhibition touchpoint. The printed motifs and illuminated material connect the object to the exhibition’s visual world.

Participation & Exhibition Delivery

The work continued through making, facilitation and the practical details of bringing an exhibition to its audience.

From looking to making together

I was deeply involved in the public programme, helping participants engage with the painting motifs through hands-on making. This sat alongside production coordination, selected exhibition graphics and support for the final delivery.

Across the exhibition team

Visual development → Production preparation → Supplier communication → Installation & public programme

This project connected cultural interpretation with the realities of materials, production and public participation.
